Here’s one we picked up from the Times of India.

The story started a week past on Saturday when a UK registered LPG tanker, the BW Maple ploughed into the Indian registered petroleum tanker Dawn Kanchipuram at the speed of around 9knots approximately two nautical miles off the Kamarajar Port at Ennore near Chennai.
The collision ruptured the water ballast tank, crew cabin, and fuel pipeline with heavy fuel oil leaking into the sea – both skins of the ship were ruptured. The Port claimed no damage was done to environment. However, go look for yourself – that clearly was not the case – in fact some 70 tonnes of “oil sludge” was removed by the coastguard although the operators claimed the spill was only 2 tonnes. What’s more oil spill containment equipment was deployed immediately but didn’t contain the spill – see:
Some 2000 people were involved in the clean up – reportedly using 25 litre buckets and without proper PPE. 2-3kms of coast were initially thought to be affected although reports from the New York Times suggest 25 miles of coastline have been affected. Other reports have indicates 20 sea turtles have washed up dead already. Imagine that happening here? Surely it couldn’t – but what’s different? It should never have happened – modern GPS should have prevented that kind of incident occurring but didn’t – it happened in the dark and the damage was done but a British registered (Isle of Man) vessel who you would think would have had the highest of safety standards. Now – imagine an oil tanker coming along the Moray Firth – a cruse ship ploughs into and there is oil everywhere – remember that pilotage only occurs up to the CFPA boundary – after that they are on their own. Can you imagine the carnage that would ensure even if the oil spill contingency plan operated without a hitch. Even if you ignored all the other issues surrounding STS – this along would make it a risk too far. If you think that’s far fetched then check this story out about a cruise ship colliding with an oil tanker in 2015 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3141846/Holidaymakers-forced-abandon-cruise-ship-collides-oil-tanker-coast-Turkey-leaving-huge-dent-hull.html
